I am sure many of you wonder, how a physician, who should know better, could
have developed such poor eating, exercise, and sleep habits. Yes, as a
physician, I know that obesity is a rapidly growing (no pun intended) epidemic
in this country, even among our children. I know what causes it, and the
numerous medical conditions and complications it contributes to. I know
that it is the second highest preventable cause of death in this country (next
to smoking). I also know how to diagnose and treat obesity. Most of
us know all of these things as well. However, like all of you, I am human, with
many of the same weaknesses and faults!
Now that I have participated on NBC's The Biggest Loser
2, many people assume that I am an "Obesity Expert."
I am not. Thirteen weeks on
a weight-loss show does not make me an expert.
I consider myself an “Obesity Survivor.” I am not cured. I
know that I must maintain control over my condition almost everyday to keep it
in remission.
There are several lessons I learned during my time on
the show (thanks to Jillian) that helped me accomplish more than just weight loss – I have
regained my physical, mental, and spiritual health back.
I am now a better father, husband, and a more effective family physician.
I “lead by example” as a parent, rather than relying on a “do as I
say, not as I do” mentality. My
patients now look at me as someone who “practices what he preaches.”
These are simple lessons, but they took me 43 years to learn and
appreciate, and will take me a lifetime to master.
